Book Sales

In 1958, the first used book sale took place. Called "New Books for Old," it was an innovative approach to raising money. Today there are book sales in 30 communities, organized by dedicated volunteers. A stellar example is the North Shore Chapter in Illinois, which has the largest used book sale in the world. It continues for ten days in a 12,000 square foot tent holding more than 500,000 used books. Every book lover or book dealer has either attended or heard about this sale. In addition, there are four permanent bookstores operated by volunteers. All books are donated, and the proceeds replenish the Brandeis library shelves.
