Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter, the Obama administration’s highest-ranking higher-education official, resigned to pursue other opportunities in academia. She joined the Education Department in 2009 after serving as chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District in California. During her time in the federal government, she led the administration’s efforts to bolster two-year institutions and promoted the use of open educational resources to attempt to lower textbook costs.
