At Brandeis Online, we are committed to fostering high-quality, engaging, and accessible learning experiences. To achieve this, our faculty adhere to clearly defined course design standards aligned with the Online Course Quality Rubric, based on the research-backed SUNY Quality Rubric. These standards ensure that all courses meet rigorous expectations in terms of structure, content, accessibility and continuous improvement, supporting both faculty and students in the online learning environment.

Course Design Standards Overview

Our Online Course Design Standards cover seven key areas, guiding faculty in developing courses that foster effective learning and engagement. Learning designers are available to assist faculty at each step of the design and review process, ensuring alignment with these standards.

1. Course Overview and Information

Faculty are expected to create clear and comprehensive course materials that outline:

  • A welcoming introduction and easy-to-follow course orientation.
  • A syllabus that meets Brandeis Online standards, including course outcomes and policies.
  • A detailed course schedule and clear objectives to guide students throughout the term.

2. Course Technology and Tools

Courses must specify technical requirements and skill-building opportunities. All tools and platforms used must be accessible, meet privacy standards and include proper guidance for students to successfully engage in the course.

3. Design and Layout

Courses should have a logical, accessible layout that supports easy navigation. This includes using accessible fonts, clear headings and organized content to support all students, including those using assistive technologies.

4. Content and Activities

Faculty should curate diverse, engaging resources that align with course outcomes. Activities should mirror real-world applications, allowing students to apply their learning through case studies, simulations and collaborative projects.

5. Interaction

Courses must promote meaningful instructor-student and peer-to-peer interactions. These activities, which include discussions, group work and community-building exercises, should be integral to the course and account for a significant portion of the final grade.

6. Assessment and Feedback

Assessment methods should be clear, frequent, and aligned with learning outcomes.
Faculty must provide students with opportunities for self-assessment and deliver timely, constructive feedback to support ongoing progress.

7. Continuous Improvement

Faculty are encouraged to self-assess their course design, incorporate student feedback and consult with learning designers for ongoing refinement. Continuous improvement ensures that courses evolve to meet the changing needs of students and the discipline. By following these standards, Brandeis Online faculty create courses that are not only academically rigorous but also accessible, engaging, and continuously evolving to meet the highest standards of online education.

Continuous Improvement Practice in Brandeis Online Programs

At Brandeis Online, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic quality and relevance. Every three years, we conduct a comprehensive review of our master's programs, assessing curriculum alignment, industry trends and student outcomes. Following this review, courses within the program undergo a refresh to ensure they meet current best practices in online learning, incorporate the latest content and provide an engaging learning experience for our students. This cyclical process ensures that our programs remain cutting-edge and responsive to the evolving needs of our fields.
