Biological Database Systems
In order to be properly utilized, biological data storage systems must be designed to cross-reference against a host of different sources. In addition, biological data tends to have certain formatting issues with storage and transmission. This course addresses these topics by introducing relational databases and their design as related to biological data management. The formats of common public repositories are covered, such as NCBI and ENSEMBL, as well as federation techniques between different types of data. This course includes methods of data transfer (BioPax, MLs, and others).
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
Be familiar with a variety of biological databases and their relationships, and access these data sources programmatically.
Apply biology and experimental techniques to derive and manipulate biological datasets.
Interpret common data exchange formats and how they relate to biological databases.
Apply relational database concepts by building a relational database.
Present your constructed database's interface, including its rationale and significance.
Integrate data from a variety of publicly available data sources.
