Ruby Programming

This course introduces the fundamentals of Ruby, a popular open source dynamic language which balances functional (declarative) and imperative (procedural) programming. Students will learn how to obtain and install Ruby, create and debug programs, write test cases, and distribute Ruby software. The course will introduce the Ruby on Rails framework.
The course is centered on a term-long course project. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Write a requirements document for their Ruby application.
• Create a CLI-based application which drives the core classes and methods for the application and simple flat-file storage.
• Create a test harness.
• Add documentation for the core code.
• Use Ruby CGI to create a simple forms-based Web interface.
• Refactor the flat-file storage with a MySQL database back-end.
