Hornstein students engage in intellectually challenging courses addressing the broad themes of Classical and Contemporary Jewish Studies, Professional Leadership Perspectives, and Management of Organizations.
Students complete a minimum of 80-82 credits, roughly equivalent to 20 courses, over the course of 5 semesters (21 months). Depending on the specific degree program, students take 30-36 credits (most courses are 4 credits; some 2) in the Hornstein Program. Other courses are selected from the Heller School, the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and other Graduate School departments.
Supporting Hornstein’s stimulating classroom experience are Brandeis University’s superb library and technology resources, including over one million volumes and a dedicated Judaic Studies department. Additionally, due to Hornstein’s location in the vibrant Boston-area Jewish community, community leaders are often invited to class to lend their perspective on the topic at hand.
Hornstein classes are deliberately small, allowing maximum interaction between faculty and students.

“In order to be an
effective professional you must understand the structure of the
community, key players and their history. But you must also learn
to look toward the future and imagine where the Jewish community
can go in the next 10, 20 or 30 years. While in the Hornstein Program,
I was taught about the rich history of the North American Jewish
community as well as encouraged to dream about what its future could
be.”

“Hornstein sayings and classes are always in my heart. I feel much more aware of the larger Jewish community and more knowledgeable about process, visioning and processing. I am forever grateful for my studies and the faculty's guidance.”
