Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program

If you want to become a Jewish community executive, this program will give you the skills and expertise you need: a strong foundation in both management and nonprofit practices, as well as a deep knowledge of Judaica and contemporary Jewish life. You’ll take courses taught by scholars across the university, including management courses focused on nonprofit organizations and courses specific to the Jewish community.

Career and Alumni Information

As highly trained organizational leaders, Hornstein MA-MBA graduates are well prepared to work in a range of settings, including Jewish federations and Jewish community centers, advocacy organizations, camps, schools and start-ups.

Our program has more than 700 alumni working in such organizations as Ma'ayan: Torah Studies from the Sources, Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund of San Francisco, Moishe House, Camp Kadimah and the Anti-Defamation League of New England.

Curriculum Information

Over 21 months (four and a half semesters, including the summer between years one and two), you’ll take Hornstein courses totaling 36 credits, MBA courses totaling 38 credits and electives totaling six credits, for a total of 80 credits. You’ll be required to demonstrate proficiency in modern Hebrew.

The final Hornstein course is a capstone, where you’ll begin to apply your new knowledge to the professional workplace. You’ll also complete, during your final Hornstein semester, the Team Consulting Project Workshop, which will give you the team-building skills and consulting tools you’ll need throughout your career.

If you want to become a professional leader who can effect positive change for the Jewish community at the policy level, you’ll need policy analysis and development skills as well as knowledge of Judaic studies and contemporary Jewish life — all of which our MA-MPP track is designed to impart. This track will teach you how to both assess policy and practice and design and implement strategic solutions.

As well-trained leaders and policy experts, Hornstein MA-MPP graduates are well prepared to work in a range of settings, including Jewish advocacy organizations, government, and academia.

Our program has more than 700 alumni. They are currently applying their leadership and policy expertise in such locations as the Joint Committee on Education, Massachusetts State House as a research analyst; Jewish Community Relations Council as a social justice coordinator; and United Jewish Communities of Metrowest New Jersey as an associate in planning and allocations.

In addition to taking academic courses, you’ll gain professional experience in the field and travel to Jewish communities around the world, from New York to Israel and locations farther afield.

If you want to help shape — and implement — a vision for Jewish life in the 21st century, consider the MA-MA track. It’s a great way to gain Jewish leadership training while delving into your area of interest in Jewish studies. Working with leading Judaic scholars, you’ll acquire the deep knowledge of Jewish history, culture and tradition that’s needed to understand contemporary Jewish issues.

 We are home to one of the oldest and largest Jewish studies programs outside of the State of Israel as well as many related centers and institutes. Our library houses one of the best collections of Hebraica and Judaica in the nation. What’s more, our multidisciplinary Near Eastern and Judaic Studies department is one of the largest and most diverse programs of its kind.

Careers and Alumni Information

Our graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral studies as well as to positions at The David Project, Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Camp Tawonga, Jewish Teen Foundations and the American Jewish Committee.

The final Hornstein course is a capstone, where you’ll begin to apply your new knowledge to the professional workplace. You’ll also complete a master’s thesis, a final project or an oral examination.

In addition to taking academic courses, you’ll gain professional experience in the field and travel to Jewish communities around the world, from New York to Israel and locations farther afield.

If you are seeking the knowledge and skills to lead in Jewish educational settings, such as camps, experiential educational programs, Hillels, synagogues, day schools, museums, federations and more, the MA-EdM dual degree program could be for you.
