Peter Van Zandt Lane, at MacDowell Colony, composing ballet

Peter Van Zandt Lane, who received his PhD in music composition and theory from Brandeis this spring, is composing a ballet for Juventas New Music Ensemble in collaboration with choreographer Kate Ladenheim and her dance company, The People Movers.

He is working on the composition during a fellowship at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. He was previously in residence at the Yaddo artist retreat this spring.

Van Zandt Lane received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami before coming to Brandeis for his master’s and doctorate. He received the 2013 Sandy Prize for Music at commencement. Van Zandt Lane lectures in music theory at Wellesley College and in electronic music at Brandeis.

He will preview music from the ballet, tentatively titled “Hackpolitik,” at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture in Peterborough, New Hampshire, on June 7. International media headlines about “hacktivists” inspired the work.
