Requirements for Minor

Satisfactory completion (earning a minimum grade of C-minus) of at least 10 semester courses, with at least five of those courses taken in residence at Brandeis.

Requirements include:

1. The EAS core course HIST 80a (Introduction to East Asian Civilization).

2. Completion of the 40 level or its equivalent in Chinese or Japanese. Students who formally demonstrate this level of competence in another East Asian language may use it to fulfill the requirement.

  • No language course below the 40 level may count toward the 10 required courses for the major before a student has fulfilled his East Asian studies language requirement. However, once a student has fulfilled the 40 level in one language, courses in additional East Asian languages at or above the 20 level may then count toward the 10 required courses.
  • If a student has been exempt from the EAS language requirement, that student will need to take a sixth "free" elective. For further information on these language requirements and exemptions, see the undergraduate advising head or the EAS administrator.

3. Eight electives from the EAS course offerings.

  • Students are required to take at least one course in the social sciences (in addition to HIST 80a) and at least one course in the humanities or creative arts.
  • The six "free" electives may be composed of any combination of pre-approved EAS cross-listed courses from social science, the humanities and the creative arts courses. An additional seventh "free" elective is required if the student has been exempt from the EAS language requirement.

4. Candidates for honors are required to:

  • Register for EAS 99d or for a 99d in an appropriate department
  • Prepare an honors thesis on a topic relating to East Asia

If completed successfully, the 99d (a year-long two-semester course) can be counted as two of the 10 courses of the major.
