There are 2 tracks to the Gralla Fellows Program, one for Religion journalists and one for journalists of the Jewish press, that take place alternate years. The next program for Religion journalists will take place at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts (near Boston) from Sunday, July 11th - Wednesday, July 14th, 2004. The next program for journalists of the Jewish press is scheduled for the summer of 2005. Who can apply? The Gralla Fellowships are geared to journalists in the early and middle-stages of their careers with limited background in Judaica who seek to strengthen their base of Jewish knowledge and deepen their knowledge of the American Jewish community. Journalists actively working in the religion press, either as writers or editors in print, audio, visual, or digital media—full, part-time, or freelance—are eligible. The program is open to people of all races, religions, and creeds. What will participants do during their week at Brandeis University? Gralla Journalism Fellows participate in a series of lectures, seminars, tours, and workshops led by leading scholars, community leaders, and journalists. Topics focus on the American Jewish religion “beat” and include Jewish texts; history, religion, and culture; American Jewish life and institutions; Israel and Israel-Diaspora relations; inter- and intra-group relations; and contemporary American Jewish issues. The Program is directed by Professor Jonathan D. Sarna, Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History, Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies Department at Brandeis. What is the cost of the program? Full funding for tuition, room, board is provided by the Program. Additionally, up to $300 in transportation costs is reimbursed to each Fellow (upon presentation of original receipts). Fellows stay in dormitory suites on the Brandeis campus.
