No serious injuries in off-campus student residence fire

July 4, 2019

Dear Members of the Brandeis Community,

I am writing to make you aware of a serious incident that occurred yesterday (July 3) affecting several of our students who live off-campus in a nearby residence.

On Wednesday afternoon there was a large fire in a South Street residence where a recent graduate alumna and several of our undergraduate and graduate students live. One graduate student has been treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. None of the other students reported being injured.

We have been in touch with all of the affected students to support their immediate needs. Four of the students are now being housed on-campus. Coordinated by the Dean of Students Office, the Brandeis Counseling Center, the Department of Community Living, and Public Safety are collectively responding to any immediate needs. We will continue to stay in close touch with these students in the days and weeks ahead.  If there are opportunities for the broader Brandeis community to be helpful we will reach out again with more information.

While this was a very frightening incident, we are grateful that no one was seriously injured. We are especially thankful for the response by the City of Waltham, its Fire Department and other first responders. Times like this remind us that not only are we fortunate to be a part of the Brandeis community, but to have the support of the greater Waltham community as well.

Sincerely,

Ron Liebowitz
