Call for Richman Fellowship and Gittler Prize Nominations

January 30, 2023

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I write to ask for your help in identifying candidates for the 2024 Richman Distinguished Fellowship in Public Life and the Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize, two of Brandeis’ most prestigious awards, which bring influential leaders to campus to meet with students and faculty.

The Richman Distinguished Fellowship honors individuals active in public life whose contributions have had a significant impact on improving American society, strengthening democratic institutions, advancing social justice, or increasing opportunities for all citizens to realize and share in the benefits of this nation. Winners have included disability rights activist Rebecca Cokley, climate scientist Peter Frumhoff, and former executive editor of the Washington Post and editor of the Boston Globe Marty Baron, who will be in residence at Brandeis this coming March.

The Joseph B. and Toby Gittler Prize recognizes an individual who has made outstanding and lasting scholarly contributions to racial, ethnic, and/or religious relations. Previous recipients of the Gittler Prize include conflict resolution expert John Paul Lederach, Racial Empowerment Collective Director Howard C. Stevenson, and leading African American studies scholar Carol Anderson. Recently, we announced that cultural critic, sociologist, and author Tressie McMillan Cottom is the 2023 winner of the Gittler Prize, and will be in residence at Brandeis this coming fall.

Both awards are hosted by the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life on behalf of the Office of the President and Office of the Provost. You are invited to submit your nominations online by March 1 for the Richman Fellowship, and April 1 for the Gittler Prize, via the prizes’ individual websites.

Thank you very much for your time. We look forward to reading your nominations, and welcoming the next recipients to campus in the near future.

Sincerely,

Ron Liebowitz
