Love's Labour's Lost
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Steven Maler
April 29 – May 2, 2010
Mainstage Theater
Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Arts Marquee Event
The King of Navarre and three noblemen companions swear off love – and the
company of women -- for a full three years to pursue their studies, just as the
Princess of France and her ladies are due to arrive at court. One of the
noblemen, Berowne, isn’t quite as committed as the others and suggests that the
King acted in haste agreeing to this law. The King insists that the Princess
and her entourage set up camp outside the castle then clandestine court-ship
proceeds among Shakespeare’s colorful cast of characters until the Princess is
required to return to attend the death of her father. The women now insist the
men remain faithful in their absence for a year and a day – a promise all the
men feel they can uphold. Directed by Commonwealth Shakespeare Company
artistic director Steven Maler.
