The Seagull

By Anton Chekhov
Translated by Ryan McKittrick & Julia Smeliansky
Directed by Shira Milikowsky
October 3-12
Laurie Theater, Spingold Theater Center

Anton Chekhov portrays what it means to be an artist, and particularly, an artist in love, in this, one of his most autobiographical plays. Friends and family gather at the ill Sorin's country estate to attend the premiere performance of his nephew Konstantin's new play. Meanwhile, Sorin's sister and Konstantin's mother, the famous actress Arkadina, as well as her lover Trigorin, arrive at the estate, shifting the focus away from the production, and changing the lives of all who attend. Known for offering a "theatre of mood" in place of conventional action, "The Seagull" delves into why we pursue what we love, and what happens when it eludes us.
