Professor Leonard C. Muellner!

It's not too late to get to know our Greek-professor extraordinaire, Lenny!

Lenny Muellner has been teaching courses in Ancient Greek drama, mythology, history, and language for over forty years. Spring 2015 marks his final semester teaching at Brandeis University. In addition to teaching students with an interest in the Classics at Brandeis, Professor Muellner also serves as the Director for IT and Publications at Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies. Educated at Harvard (Ph.D. 1973), his scholarly interests center on Homeric epic, with special interests in historical linguistics, anthropological approaches to the study of myth, and the poetics of oral traditional poetry.

Here at Brandeis, Professor Muellner (affectionately known as Lenny to both students and colleagues) oversees the Homer Multitext Project. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to analyze and digitize Medieval manuscripts of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey alongside an international team of scholars and students. By using technology that takes advantage of the best available practices and open source standards that have been developed for digital publications in a variety of fields, the Homer Multitext offers free access to a library of texts and images, a machine-interface to that library and its indices, and tools to allow readers to discover and engage with the Homeric tradition. Read more about what students and contributors have to say about this project by visiting their online blog. This year, students conduct their work in the new Digital Humanities Lab in the Goldfarb Library.

At the Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS), Lenny directs a team of talented individuals involved in creating online publications of scholarly works. He also participates in Harvard University's Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours. The course has proved so popular, in fact, that the CHS team created a whole network of related blog posts, videos, and other content - collectively known as Hour 25. Hour 25 is invaluable for the student of Homer, heroes, mythology, and Greek literature. Professor Muellner has contributed to Hour 25 in various capacities, too. Check it out!
