Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE) builds the power of communities of color and lower income communities in New England to eradicate environmental racism and classism, and achieve environmental justice. It is based in Roxbury, MA. See Professor Goldin. www.ace-ej.org
Bikes Not Bombs is a small international non-profit that sends bikes to developing nations as micro-enterprise and transportation assistance. Congress for the New Urbanism, New England Chapter provides urban and community planning internship. The Mission of the New England Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU NE[1]) is to promote a collaborative and dynamic approach to the art of community building within New England; to engage the public and development community in a dialogue about The Charter of the New Urbanism; to allow New England's legacy of great towns and cities to inform the application of the Charter of the New Urbanism to the region; and to achieve sustainable design and policy solutions. Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization that use law, economics and science to create innovative strategies to conserve natural resources, protect public health and promote vital communities in New England. Genetic Engineering Action Network (GEAN) seeks to support and further the work of those organizations and individuals working to address the risks to the environment, biodiversity and human health, as well as the socioeconomic and ethical consequences of genetic engineering. Green Corps, a Boston-based non-profit, has created a full-time, paid environmental leadership training program open to 25 recent college graduates. Living on Earth is a radio program that is broadcast on National Public Radio and is produced by World Media Foundation, Inc., a non-profit seeking to report quality coverage of environmental issues. An editorial internship is available and provides an invaluable introduction to broadcast media. Interns work in our Davis Square,
Somerville bureau. Intern responsibilities, include (but are not limited to) assisting in various phases of story production, from finding and researching original stories and helping track down experienced correspondents, contacts and newsmakers, to critiquing final scripts, monitoring the news wires and newspapers for environmental affairs. Mass Energy Consumers Alliance has worked since 1982 to make energy more affordable and environmentally sustainable for the consumers of Massachusetts. Mass Energy has over 16,000 members in the heating oil and green electricity programs. Interns will about the renewable energy market place, concentrating on New England resources. Become familiar with the economic, political, and social issues concerns surrounding renewable energy development. Focus on how we can increase the supply of wind and solar power through voluntary purchasing programs offered through Mass Energy. Build voluntary renewable energy purchasing through Brandeis University and the city of Waltham. Help win solar panels for a Waltham schools by launching a campaign to get 150 qualifying participants to join New England Wind Fund! Tasks include (adaptable to interns skills and interests): organizing, community development, marketing, research, communications, writing, design, fundraising, public speaking, event planning, and renewable energy development.

New England Wildlife Center is a nonprofit, native wildlife preservation and educational organization in Hingham, MA. They provide humane care to 225 species of native and naturalized wild animals through their wildlife medicine hospital. Internships are available in wildlife medicine and natural history. Intern responsibilities are broad and demanding; they can include foraging for wildlife foods, dietary design and preparation, cleaning, maintaining medical records, and release of patients into appropriate habitats, among many other things. The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is a student activism and training organization based in New York City. It is one of the largest of the PIRG student groups innovated by Ralph Nader, 34 of which operate at the state level and are members of the umbrella organization USPIRG. (The state PIRGs are today autonomous of Nader and have no partisan political affiliation.) Because of its success and its established place in New York State politics, NYPIRG tends to operate autonomous of USPIRG. NYPIRG is controlled by a student board of directors. Any issue that NYPIRG works on, or stance it takes, must be approved by its student board of directors. NYPIRG is New York's largest consumer protection and good government organization. Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium is a public-private partnership of companies, public agencies, and university and federal laboratories working together to promote advanced vehicle technologies in the Northeast United States. Northeast Wilderness Trust (NWT), a non-profit land conservation organization, is seeking a land preservation intern to work in our Boston office. The Northeast Wilderness Trust is working to restore and preserve forever-wild landscapes for wildlife and people. The Trust preserves private land as wilderness through conservation easements, land acquisition and education. Founded in 2001, our goals are to: preserve and create wilderness, promote the protection of private land as wild, and educate landowners and the general public about the importance of wilderness in the Northeast. The land preservation intern will work closely with the staff and Board of Directors in carrying out tasks such as: researching land protection projects, site visits to protected land, reports and grant writing, office duties pertaining to land protection, representing the organization at conferences, and other duties necessary to fulfill our mission. Resources for the Future improves environmental and natural resource policymaking worldwide through objective social science research and is based out of Washington DC. 10-week internships are available for undergraduate and graduate students during the summer. Salem Sound Coastwatch (SSCW) is a nonprofit organization, working with government agencies, businesses, volunteers, and other nonprofits to protect and improve costal habitats, commercial and recreational marine resources, and water quality. Though it is based out of Salem, MA, SSCW works to protect these things in all of the communities in the Salem Sound Watershed. Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary includes a boardwalk along Teal Marsh, and to the middle of Kingfisher Pond near Norfolk, MA. The nature center hosts a number of educational programs during the summer and school years. Student Conservation Association (SCA) is a leader in national resource conservation, providing service opportunities, outdoor skills and leadership training to thousands of young women and men each year. SCA provides housing, a living-stipend, possible academic credit, AmeriCorps education awards, insurance, and travel to the project site. SCA interns serve for 3 to 12 months and gain on-the-job experience with partners like the National Park Service, the US Forest Service, and many other federal, state, and non-profit partners in conservation fields from archaeology, to education, history, wildlife studies, visitor services and everything in between! Union of Concerned Scientists is an independent nonprofit alliance of more than 100,000 concerned citizens and scientists, that combines scientific analysis with committed citizen advocacy to build a cleaner, healthier environment and a safer world. Interns work in many areas including grassroots organizing, lobbying, policy research, or outreach. They may attend hearings, help plan special events, attend strategy sessions, conduct research, and many other things. The UCS Global Environment Program seeks an upper class undergraduate for production assistance with the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment (NECIA), a multi-disciplinary research and communication effort that UCS is coordinating. With support and oversight from UCS staff, the production assistant will carry out tasks such as: gathering and organizing material (photos, graphics, author bios, etc.) for use in the final reports and outreach products of the NECIA, gathering background information on target Northeast states and sectors, for use in the final reports, and/or assisting with the development of graphics and figures for publicly-accessible outreach material. Urban Ecology Institute aims "to promote the stewardship of healthy urban ecosystems by improving science and civic education for middle and high school youth and by working with urban communities to protect and transform natural resources." Waltham Land Trust is a private, non-profit Massachusetts corporation dedicated to preserving the community's natural resources through open space advocacy, education, acquisition, and protection. The Waltham Land Trust is seeking an intern for the spring 2006 semester to help create a Guide to Waltham’'s Open Spaces. With oversight from the Land Trust's Program Manager and Land Committee, the intern will be responsible for the research, writing and GIS (ideally, although GIS proficiency is not a requirement for the internship) work involved in creating the Guide. Specific duties include identifying, with assistance from the Land Trust's Land Committee, the parcels to be included in the Guide, identifying, with assistance from the Land Committee, existing trails on the above parcels, writing brief descriptions of the parcels, including special features (such as wildlife, geology, etc.) and access information (directions, parking, public transportation, etc.), utilizing existing data to create GIS maps of the parcels (volunteer may be available to help with this part of the project), utilizing GPS to map existing trails (volunteer may be available to help with this part of the project). The spring semester internship is for credit only. It is possible that the Land Trust may receive a grant to fund a summer internship to complete the project. They are also seeking a Conservation Research intern to research the legal status of several pieces of "open space" in Waltham - parcels that may have been purchased with the intent of having them preserved as open space, but which do not yet have the necessary legal protections. This will require reviewing city documents and meeting with various city officials and Land Trust Board members with knowledge of individual parcels. The Waltham Raw New England Community (WRNEC) is an unofficial non-profit organization interested in promoting public awareness of the impact of healthy living on the individual as well as on the global environment. Interns would be primarily working with Randy Jacobs, a Waltham resident and business owner, who is the Director of Life Force Growers, Betsy Bragg, a Waltham resident and volunteer organizer of the WRNEC and a member of Earth Quakers and Joe Lucier, raw food chef, medical massage therapist, software engineer and editor of the WRNEC website.See Professor Goldin.

West Harlem Environmental Action (WE ACT) was founded in March 1988 by Vernice Miller, Peggy Shepard and Chuck Sutton to address ongoing West Harlem community struggles around the poor management of the North River Sewage Treatment Plant and the construction of the sixth bus depot across from an intermediate school and a large housing development -- a densely populated and heavily trafficked area. WE ACT evolved into an environmental justice organization committed to empowering the community to become a vocal, informed and proactive force that determines and implements its vision of what its environment can and should be. World Wildlife Fund for Nature is an international non-governmental organization for the conservation, research and restoration of the natural environment, formerly named the World Wildlife Fund, which remains its official name in the United States and Canada. It is the world's largest independent conservation organisation with over 5 million supporters worldwide, working in more than 90 countries, supporting 15,000 conservation and environmental projects around the world. Zoo New England is dedicated to teaching wildlife and wildland preservation through responsible management and exhibition of wildlife. There are a number of summer internships available, including animal care, veterinary, and horticultural. The internships include 400hrs in the zoo area, classes each week and a self-chosen project. Government
Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, Law and Policy Section in Washington D.C., advises and assists the Assistant Attorney General on legal and policy issues. Along with the Office of Legislative Affairs, the Section coordinates and directs the Division's legislative program, including representing the Department on interagency groups that develop the Administration's position on legislation and at meetings with congressional staff. LPS also litigates amicus cases and undertakes other specially assigned litigation projects. Other duties include monitoring and participating in citizen suits; responding to citizen mail, congressional and FOIA requests; and serving as the Division's ethics officers. LPS attorneys also coordinate the Division's activities on international environmental matters and environmental justice matters. Duties of the unpaid undergraduate intern position include: responding to citizen correspondence; attending Congressional hearings and reporting on environmental legislation; researching legal and policy issues; and providing support for the section's litigation. Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, EOEA Massachusetts State Sustainability Program works with state agencies, colleges and universities to reduce the environmental impacts resulting from state government operations. Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, EOEA Massachusetts Sustainable Development/Smart Growth is focused on reforming land development patterns across the Commonwealth. Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, EOEA Massachusetts Water Policy focuses on key water-related issues and recommends a number of actions for protecting water resources.
