Judaism
The Jewish community is served by two chaplains and Hillel.
The Jewish chaplain of the University's office is in the Usdan Student center in the chaplains’ hallway on the main level. He/she is available to students for religious study and spiritual counseling. He/she helps the various Jewish religious groups at Brandeis plan their services and activities, and is in residence at Brandeis for most Sabbaths and holidays. He/she coordinates a variety of services for the High Holidays for which he conducts the Conservative services. He/she is available for students of all faiths. He/she serves on the Council of Religions and is involved in many of the panel discussions and programs of interfaith dialogue.
The Jewish chaplain is joined in Jewish religious leadership by Rabbi Elliot and Toby Kaplowitz who direct Hillel’s Jewish Learning Initiative. The Kaplowitz's are the advisors to the Orthodox community at Brandeis.
Hillel at Brandeis provides a rich and vibrant Jewish life at the University through programs that address the varied spiritual, educational, social, and political needs and interests of students. Hillel coordinates more than twenty affiliated Jewish student groups. Larry Sternberg is Hillel’s Executive Director, Cindy Spungin is its Director of Student Activities, and Anna Berezina is Director of Outreach and Engagement. Hillel is located in the Usdan Student center on the first floor above the chaplains’ offices.
Jewish prayer services take place at Berlin Chapel (Brandeis’ Jewish chapel) and at several other locations across campus. The Beit Midrash in Shapiro Residence Hall is always open for lively Jewish learning.
