DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)

RISE stands for Research Internships in Science and Engineering. RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American and British universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. RISE Germany is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office

  • Students are matched with a host university or institute according to their area of interest (biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, or a closely related field)
  • DAAD provides students a monthly stipend for three months to help cover living expenses
  • Host universities and institutes provide housing assistance and match students with Ph.D. student mentors
  • German language is not required and the working language will be in English

Who:
Applicants must be currently enrolled at a university/college in the United States, Canada or the UK as a full-time student in the field of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences or engineering (or a closely related field). Applicants must be an undergraduate who will have completed at least 2 years of a degree program by the time of the internship placement and prove that they will maintain undergraduate status after the internship has taken place.

Where:
Students work with a Ph.D. student mentor at various universities in Germany

Duration:
Recipients begin their internship between May 15 and July 10 (the three-day meeting of all RISE scholarship holders in Heidelberg takes place at the beginning of July 6-8, 2017), and stay for a maximum period of three months (10 weeks minimum).

Cover letter for each project applied to, Curriculum Vitae (CV), transcript(s), enrollment verification, letter of recommendation

January 15, 2017

Notification:
Once your complete application is received, they will send you a confirmation via email. By mid-February, all PhD students submit a list of preference. They have the option to exclude undergraduates who they feel are unsuited, which rarely happens. They will then begin with the placement process and notify you of the outcome at the beginning of March or later.
