Coronavirus/COVID-19 Informational Updates
Information about COVID-19 guidelines and protocols at Brandeis has changed frequently as public health guidance has changed; please be aware that the information in this letter may be outdated. For the latest information, please visit the COVID-19 Response website.

We know there are, and will continue to be, many questions around how Brandeis is moving forward with all classes going online and most undergraduates leaving campus for the rest of the semester. While we do not have all the answers right now, a large group of staff and faculty are working very hard to make this transition to an online environment as smooth as possible for students — please know they are doing so with great empathy and appreciation for all that students and families are coping with as they adjust to these changes.
In the interest of sharing information as quickly as possible, we will be sending frequent emails with updates to the university’s response to coronavirus/COVID-19. We will provide new information, updates, and clarifications when we learn there are misunderstandings. We will also continue to update our FAQs with new information.
Refunds and financial aid:
Students moving out of university residence halls will receive a pro-rated refund for room and meal plan charges – meaning that the university will refund departing students for the portion of the spring semester they will not be living in their residence hall and using dining services. These adjustments, as well as any changes to need-based financial aid, will be calculated and applied to students’ accounts after students move out of university housing. Dining services will remain available for students who receive permission from the Department of Community Living to stay on campus, or who will continue to live off-campus in Waltham.
Changes in Dining Services starting Friday 3/13
Starting Friday, dining services will consolidate dining primarily to Sherman and Usdan. Dining staff will serve food directly at all locations rather than allowing self-service, to minimize the number of individuals handling serving utensils. In order to support this change, staff will need to be reassigned, and so the following locations will close:
- Mandel Café
- Science Center Café
- Heller Starbucks
- Farber Library Starbucks
- The Stein
- Currito’s in Upper Usdan
The Faculty Club, Dunkin' Donuts, Einstein’s, Louis' Deli, SubConnection, and the Sushi bar located in Upper Usdan will remain open for the time being.
Changes in CDC-designated Level-3 countries
As you know, Brandeis has prohibited international travel on university business, and is requiring community members who travel from countries designated as “Level-3” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to stay away from campus for 14 days while they self-monitor for symptoms. Yesterday, the CDC added most of Europe to its list of Level-3 countries. If you are a member of the Brandeis community traveling in Europe, please check the list of countries, and if you have been in any of those countries within the past 14 days, you must self-monitor and be symptom-free until that 14-day period has passed before you can come to campus for any reason.
The Office of Study Abroad is in direct contact with Brandeis students abroad and is working to help students in countries newly designated as Level-3 to return home immediately. The office is now strongly recommending that all students consider ending their study abroad early and return to their home country to avoid future travel restrictions.
Instruction that is not classroom-based
Students who have classes that are based in labs, performance spaces or studios undoubtedly have additional questions about how Brandeis will manage the move to online learning. Please know that departments and professors are working to do all that they can to recreate or transform those learning experiences just as faculty who teach via seminars and lectures are. The Center for Teaching and Learning is assisting faculty with moving their courses online. Professors will be communicating directly with their students about what that will look like in each individual class. We request your patience as they provide information as quickly as they can.
