The Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully funded, full time, graduate study scholarship at the University of Oxford. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on their academic excellence and leadership potential for any career they may choose. The program is funded for two years or more of graduate study of any discipline at Oxford.

Eligibility

For U.S. Citizens

U.S. Citizen or permanent citizen
Between 18 and 24 years old
Completed undergraduate degree by the July before the start of the program
Minimum 3.7 GPA

For Non-U.S. Citizens

Apply through your home country/territory
Apply for an Inter-Jurisdictional Consideration
Between 18 and 24 years old.
Completed undergraduate degree by July before the start of the program.
Minimum 3.7 GPA.

National Deadline: Varies by country of application. Please check the Rhodes Scholarship website to see country/territory-specific deadlines. Deadlines can range from May to September, so you are encouraged to reach out to the Academic Fellowships Team early.

Award

Covers Oxford University course fees
Provides an annual stipend. For the 2022/23 academic year, the stipend is £17,310 per annum (£1,442.50 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation.

How to Apply

Contact Academic Fellowships to set up a meeting to discuss the application process and strategy.
Show proof of lawful U.S. citizenship with a scanned copy of a passport, birth certificate, or other proof of citizenship.
Order official transcripts from the registrar office.
Upload a CV
Upload a Head-and-shoulders color photo of yourself
Write a 750-word personal statement that answers the guided prompts given by the Rhodes Scholarship
Write a 350-word academic statement of study that outlines why you want to study at Oxford University
Request 5-8 letters of reference from people who can attest to your academic achievement and personal character.

What Makes a Rhodes Scholar?

The Rhodes Scholarship is seeking students who demonstrate the following qualities:

Academic excellence (above 3.7 GPA).
Energy to use your talents to the full potential (as demonstrated by success in areas such as sports, music, debate, dance, theater, and artistic pursuits, including where teamwork is involved).
Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness, and fellowship.
Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and take an interest in your fellow human beings.
