Supporting Research, Creativity and Collaborative Innovation

This task force is asked to evaluate how we can create a more effective research infrastructure that supports the advancement, financial support and visibility of research, scholarship and creative work at Brandeis, and that promotes our historical strength in collaboration and exploring across boundaries. This group will be asked to deliver specific recommendations based on its work in the form of a succinct report to be delivered to the president by mid-spring.

The task force will gather and benchmark data on competitive federal and philanthropic funding for research, creative endeavors, and innovation, and on the impact and recognition of achievements in research, scholarship and creative work. The group will assess existing and nascent opportunities for collaboration vertically among undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff, and horizontally within and between Brandeis schools, departments, centers and institutes and between Brandeis and other institutions.

The group will work to ascertain the most significant challenges to research and creative productivity including infrastructure and organization, develop proposals for overcoming these challenges, and identify new opportunities for faculty and for all members of the Brandeis community.

Sample Questions for the Task Force to Consider
  • Help structure a process that would support a request for proposals for a large fund of $1+ million from the provost’s office to promote exploration across boundaries. What might be areas of focus for such funding (see the German Centers of Excellence initiative as an example) e.g., transdisciplinary projects, social impact, and projects that bring together undergraduates, graduate students and faculty and the process by which to do this?

  • How do we provide more high-quality research/creative work opportunities for our undergraduates along the lines of QBReC in the sciences, the student-scholars partnership in the Women’s Studies Research Center, and the summer social sciences student research program but for more students?

  • What are the gaps in our major equipment and core facilities that are limiting factors for our faculty’s research productivity, funding success, and retention and recruitment?

  • How do we promote more industry collaboration while increasing the income from IP licenses and agreements? What other partnerships with universities and foundations should we be pursuing and what barriers may be preventing such partnerships?

  • How do we more closely integrate the freestanding centers and institutes into the university?

  • What do faculty, graduate students, postdocs, deans, staff see as the large challenges and research and scholarship opportunities ahead including external funding trends, and how is this shaping their scholarship?

  • How efficiently are we allocating space for research on campus and how can we develop a more universal space policy?

  • How do we increase our federal funding and identify new foundations, corporations and private philanthropists for support of our research and scholarship including the arts and humanities?

  • How do we best measure research productivity that is sensitive to the wide variety of research, scholarly, and creative activity across the disciplines?
