Accelerated MA Admissions

Application Requirements

We evaluate applications based on a wide range of academic, professional and personal criteria. Please review the requirements and FAQs below as you prepare your application and reach out to our Admissions team if we can answer any specific questions.
Transcripts, Prerequisites and Required Coursework

Applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree in business or economics from an accredited U.S. institution.

Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended are required (including transfer credit, study abroad, post-graduate work, etc.). Degree audits not be accepted in lieu of unofficial transcripts. Official transcripts are required from each institution only if you accept an offer of admission.

The following prerequisites must be completed prior to beginning the Accelerated MA program. Students must earn a minimum grade of “B” to meet the requirement.

These courses must be taken at an accredited 3- or 4-year, not-for-profit college or university. Each course must be at least at least 3 credits or the equivalent of a full-semester course. Courses to satisfy prerequisites may alternately be taken online and students must be able to provide the verified grade in the course. Courses taken at other educational institutions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Additionally, students must complete a minimum of 16 credits of upper-level economics or business courses, with a minimum grade of "B-" in each course, prior to beginning the Accelerated MA program.

Written Essay & Video Essay

One written essay is required as part of the online application.

The written essay question is as follows:

What drove you to pursue a graduate program in international economics and finance? (500-750 words)

Additionally, applicants must respond to a short answer question regarding their career goals (200 word maximum). If necessary, you may provide additional information that you would like the Admissions Committee to consider as part of your application in another short answer response (200 word maximum).

Applicants must submit a brief video responding to two questions posed by the Brandeis IBS community, as well as a written response to a third question. The Video Essay is a great way for the admissions committee to learn a little bit more about you. You will be prompted to complete the Video Essay once you have submitted your application.

Résumé and Experience

A current résumé detailing educational and employment history is required. The Accelerated MA program does not require work experience.

We also require a detailed employment history as part of the online application. Candidates should include internships in the employment history section of the online application.

Two recommendations are required for the Accelerated MA program. One recommendation should come from a professional contact and one recommendation should come from an academic contact. You will be asked to provide your recommenders' contact information as part of the online application. Use your recommender's institutional or corporate email address. Submissions from anonymous email servers (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) may be subject to additional review. An email with instructions on submitting the online recommendation will be sent to your recommenders. Only online recommendations will be accepted, and recommendation letters must be submitted on the recommender's organization letterhead.

Applicants must submit a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic score unless they will complete or have completed a bachelor's degree with at least three full-time academic years of study (ESL and online coursework not included) by the program start in the U.S.

TOEFL, IELTS and PTE scores are valid for up to two years. Your test score must be valid at the time your application is submitted.

An unofficial test score should be submitted as part of the online application. Official test scores are required only if you accept an offer of admission. If your test score will expire prior to the start of the program, you must submit your official test score prior to its expiration date.

The Brandeis IBS TOEFL code is 3122.
