Brandeis International Business School

Luis Medrano, MBA’08: ‘Brandeis is the right place to be’

Luis MedranoWhat piqued your interest in Brandeis? Did it meet your expectations?

I was interested in Brandeis International Business School because of its international scope and arrived on a Fulbright scholarship. During my time there, I definitely had a multicultural experience and made great friends from around the globe while getting a great education from professors with a lot of experience in their fields.

What was your internship like?

I did my summer internship at Transflora in Miami, which imports all types of flowers from South America, especially Colombia and Ecuador. I worked on several projects including a digital newspaper, creating a welcome kit for new customers, product definition and other work to increase sales and improve customer service. I also helped with the company’s name transition from Flower Transfer Inc. to Transflora. It was a great experience, especially because I had the opportunity to directly support the CCO and the head of sales.

What skills from your time at Brandeis are you using in your job?

Currently I’m in business risk and control in Citibank Guatemala, taking care of the overall control environment of the franchise, including fraud management and operational risk management. One of my principal duties is to support units in identifying risks in their processes and activities in order to implement controls to mitigate those risks.

The Brandeis MBA program gave me useful skills in analytics, statistics and problem-solving, of course, but I also learned a lot about networking and interpersonal skills. My classes gave me the opportunity to open my mind and apply what I learned in my professional career.

What should prospective students know about the International Business School?

If you’re looking for a multicultural environment and want to get to know people around the world, Brandeis is the right place to be. The economics and financial courses are also excellent because the professors are really experienced and will teach you how to manage real-life problems.
