Two-Year M.A. Program

In the first year, students take COSI 114b, along with a schedule of courses determined in conjunction with the director of graduate studies, and chosen according to each student's individual academic background. The schedule is chosen from COSI background courses including COSI 11a, COSI 12b, COSI 21a, LING 131a and LING 160b; and LING background courses including LING 120b, LING 130a, LING 115a and LING 125b.

The second year then consists of five advanced courses in computational linguistics, including COSI 134a, COSI 217b, three courses chosen from COSI 112a, COSI 135b and COSI 216a, plus either an internship in computational linguistics or a master’s thesis. The master’s thesis must be deposited electronically to the Robert D. Farber University Archives at Brandeis.

The minimum residence requirement is two years.

Five-Year B.A./M.A. Program

Students admitted to the program must fulfill the following requirements, in addition to completing their B.A. or B.S. During the undergraduate years, students will take a set of background courses in linguistics and computer science, determined in consultation with the director of graduate studies, along with COSI 114b. The fifth year will then consist of five advanced courses in computational linguistics, including COSI 134a, COSI 217b, three courses chosen from COSI 112a, COSI 135b and COSI 216a, plus either an internship in computational linguistics or a master’s thesis. The master’s thesis must be deposited electronically to the Robert D. Farber University Archives at Brandeis.
