DeLeT Cohort 10 Snapshots of Emerging Practice

The first of a four part series, this event gives Cohort 9 the opportunity to publicly reflect on their learning. Reinforcing the belief that teaching should not be a private affair that happens behind the closed doors of a classroom, the interns are invited to share and discuss their learning from the first summer of DeLeT.

As members of the MAT graduating class of 2011, DeLeT Cohort 9 along with students in the secondary and public elementary concentrations will present their classroom research projects and celebrate their graduation with an assembly of  families, friends, colleagues, and faculty.

DeLeT Alumni Summer Institute
July 11-15, 2011

The third annual Alumni Summer Institute will welcome 5-6 alumni for a week-long session to begin work on individual projects. Alumni will support each other as they begin work on projects related to teacher development that will continue on throughout the academic year.

New Teacher Network, Special Presentation: The Hidden Power of Teacher Teams

It is now widely acknowledged that teachers who work together in teams are able to achieve significant gains in student performance while improving their teaching practice. What teachers are unable to accomplish alone, or only with great difficulty, they can accomplish more successfully in a team.
 
But to get the most out of their teams, teachers, teacher leaders, and coaches/facilitators need to learn specific teaming skills in order to be able to turn collaborating groups of teachers into well-functioning instructional teams that improve student learning.
 
In this workshop you'll learn about the Five Conditions for Effective Teams, how to avoid common teaming pitfalls, and strategies aimed at improving both teacher and student learning; you will be able to discuss and understand the intricacies and tensions of teacher teamwork and assess and reflect on the level of work for your team so that the team can meet its goals.

This workshop is open and relevant to teachers of all grade levels – both Judaic studies and general studies.

This presentation will address these questions:
How does the team structure enable team members to focus on and improve instruction and student learning?
How does the team’s collective knowledge of the content influence its ability to teach it to diverse learners?

New Teacher Network (NaTaN)

The New Teacher Network is a monthly professional development opportunity for first and second year teachers in grades K-8.  In our work training teachers through the DeLeT program, we recognize that however well prepared, novice teachers need continued support and opportunities to develop and refine skills.  With that goal in mind we offer this professional development opportunity to supplement the mentoring and induction support we know many schools are offering their teachers.

The primary goal of the New Teacher Network is to nurture new teachers in Jewish day schools during their challenging and exciting first years of teaching and to provide tools to help them develop their professional practice.  Through the Network, we hope to encourage the development of a community of teacher-leaders across Jewish day schools in the Greater Boston area. The Network also provides an opportunity for experienced teachers to share their expertise and continue their own professional development.

The New Teacher Network is open to all first and second year teachers in area Jewish day schools. (Teachers do not need to be DeLeT alumni to participate.)  The group will meet monthly at the Mandel Center for a kosher dinner and lively discussion.

Third Annual Teacher Forum: Cultivating an Ethic of Excellence in Schools with Ron Berger

This workshop, will focus on helping teachers foster a capacity among students to critique work -- their own and others' -- as they develop high standards.  A central component of the afternoon will be a shared investigation of student-produced materials.  

Ron Berger is chief program officer at Expeditionary Learning, responsible for all aspects of EL's professional development and instructional program. He has over 30 years of experience as a teacher and professional development designer, and is the author of An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship in Schools (2003).  

The 2011 Teachers Forum is co-sponsored by CJP's Initiative on Day School Excellence.  

Snapshots of Emerging Practice
Thursday, January 6, 2011 4:30-6:00pm
For the second in a four part series of snapshots, cohort 8 is given the opportunity to publicly reflect on their learning. Reinforcing the belief that teaching should be open to investigation and inquiry with critical colleagues and not a private affair that happens behind closed classroom doors, the students are positioned as teacher leaders. For this second snapshot event, interns are asked to speak about one important learning and one big question they have from the fall semester. Faculty and fellow interns will comment, question, and offer support to the students.
