Lab History
The early beginnings of the CAARD lab began with Professor Mick Watson, whose research focused on risk for developing aggression, and cross-cultural developmental research focusing on those in Navajo nation. The lab was called WARG (Watson Adolescent Research Group) and supported countless undergraduate and graduate research.
When Professor Ellen Wright began teaching at Brandeis, Professor Watson kindly invited her to join the lab, so it morphed into WWARG (the Wright was added). Eventually, Professor Watson retired, and what once was WWARG became CARD (Child and Adolescent Research in Development), which then included Professor Joseph Cunningham (developmental research on emotional expression and Clinical Practicum Coordinator), Professor Teresa Mitchell (perceptual and cognitive development in special populations, including the congenitally deaf and individuals on the autism spectrum), Professor Xiaodong Liu (specializing in longitudinal analysis of child development), Professor Jutta Wolf (health psychology), and Professor Wright. As time has gone on (and Professors Cunningham and Wolf retired), Professor Hannah Clark (early adversity and risk and resilience) joined the CARD lab.
Most recently, with Professor Mitchell retiring, Professor Amanda Faherty has joined the lab. With her expertise in late adolescence and young adulthood development, our lab is officially Child, Adolescence, and Adult Research in Development.
