Pedestrian Campus Safety Initiative

Founded in November 2024, the Pedestrian Campus Safety Initiative aims to increase campus student safety through campus renovations, improving visibility of safety resources, and actively garnering student feedback/analytics. The initiative is meant to be a growing campaign involving the direct collaboration between students and Brandeis Public Safety. To get involved, reach out to Chief Matthew Rushton (mrushton@brandeis.edu) and Allan Feldman, ‘26 (alfeldman@brandeis.edu).

In November 2024, the initiative successfully put forth an approved $10,287 Community Emergency and Enhancement Fund proposal to install six LED crosswalk lights along Loop Road in Spring 2025.  LED crosswalk systems are known for increasing visibility during low-light conditions, reducing pedestrian-vehicle collisions. Due to the heavy foot traffic on busy roads like Loop Road, especially during peak hours, this project is essential for preventing accidents and ensuring student safety. The initiative aims to reduce pedestrian-vehicle accidents by 30% within six months post-installation. Prior to this proposal, campus collisions averaged six a year, with an unidentified number of near collisions.
