University Organization
Board of Trustees
Under its charter as established by Massachusetts law, Brandeis University is governed by its Board of Trustees. The Board is a self-perpetuating body, selecting its own members for four-year terms. The president of the University, the chair of the Fellows, the president of the Brandeis National Committee and the president of the Alumni Association serve ex officio with votes. The Board annually elects an alumni trustee who serves a non-renewable four-year term with full voting privileges. There are four faculty representatives and three student representatives to the Board who participate in Board meetings and have votes on the several committees.
The President
The president, the chief executive officer of the university, is appointed by the Board of Trustees and is responsible for all University activities.
Board of Fellows
University Fellows comprise about 225 national leaders from a broad base of business, educational, and public life who lend counsel, expertise, and support to University development and planning programs. University Fellows are elected by the Board of Trustees.
The Provost and Deans
The provost is the chief academic officer of the University with administrative responsibility under the president for academic policy. The provost provides strategic leadership to achieve the University's academic mission and to enhance the institution's teaching, learning and scholarship.
As the second-ranking member of the administration, the provost also has broad responsibility, under the president, for providing strategic direction and overseeing the management of resources. As chair of the Integrated Planning and Budget Committee, the provost leads the annual budget-making process. The provost also chairs the University Advisory Council (UAC), which brings together the senior vice presidents, the deans, and representatives of the faculty to review proposed policies and initiatives and make recommendations to the president and the governance bodies of the University.
The provost oversees academic policy and strategic directions for Arts and Sciences, the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, the International Business School, and the Rabb School of Continuing Studies, as well as the University Libraries, the Rose Art Museum, and various centers and institutes. Other units reporting to the provost include Library and Technology Services, the Office of Research Administration, the Office of Technology Licensing, the Registrar's Office, and Academic Services (including Academic Advising, Academic Fellowships, Disability Services, Study Abroad, International Students and Scholars, and Student Support Services).
The Dean of Arts and Sciences has authority over faculty appointment, tenure, and promotion processes, and administrative responsibility for graduate and undergraduate education and the research functions of the University in Arts and Sciences. The Dean is responsible for implementation of academic regulations, academic advising, promotion of academic integrity, undergraduate and graduate curricula, research activities, management of academic resources, and oversight of academic departments, interdepartmental programs, and other academic activities in Arts and Sciences. The Dean appoints a Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences who (reporting to the Dean of Arts and Sciences) is responsible for oversight of existing graduate academic programs, for graduate program development, graduate recruitment and admissions, and fellowships and financial aid.
The Dean of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management has authority over faculty appointment, tenure, and promotion processes, and administrative responsibility for the educational and research functions of the School. The Dean is responsible for implementation of academic regulations, academic advising, promotion of academic integrity, graduate admissions and financial aid policies, research activities of the faculty, management of academic resources, and other academic activities in the School.
The Dean of the Brandeis International Business School has authority over faculty appointment, tenure, and promotion processes, and administrative responsibility for the educational and research functions of the School. The Dean is responsible for implementation of academic regulations, academic advising, promotion of academic integrity, graduate admissions and financial aid policies, research activities of the faculty, management of academic resources, and other academic activities in the School.
The Vice President for the Rabb School of Continuing Studies oversees the degree-granting and other programs of the Rabb School. The Vice President provides strategic direction for the Rabb School, ensures the academic quality of its programs, promotes its success in the marketplace of continuing education programs, and facilitates collaboration with other parts of the University.
Faculty Senate
The Faculty Senate, elected by the faculty as its official representative body, addresses matters relevant to the educational and research missions of the University, including academic freedom, faculty rights and responsibilities, governance and university policies regarding appointments, tenure and promotion. A number of committees also contribute to the shared governance of the University, including the University Advisory Council, the University Budget Committee, the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid, the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, the Intellectual Property Review Committee, and the Committee on Faculty Rights and Responsibilities.
The Vice Presidents
The Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer oversees all financial and administrative functions.
The Senior Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer oversees Brandeis's financial operations. The office's major responsibilities include financial planning, treasury, budget, accounting, and endowment management. The senior vice president serves as principal liaison to the Audit and the Budget and Finance Committees of the Board of Trustees.
The Vice President of Operations oversees the administrative affairs of the university. The office’s areas of responsibility include Auxiliary Services, Capital Projects, Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety, Dining Services, Public Safety, and Conference and Event Services, and University Services. The vice president serves as principal liaison to the Physical Facilities Committee of the Board of Trustees.
The Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement is responsible for directing fundraising activities, including planned giving, leadership gifts, the Annual Fund, capital campaigns, alumni relations, and corporate and foundation relations. The senior vice president serves as principal liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees.
The Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment oversees the recruitment, retention, and quality of life for students. Departments and units reporting to the senior vice president include Undergraduate Admissions, Student Financial Services, Hiatt Career Center, Community Living, Student Rights and Community Standards, Sexual Assault Service and Prevention, Health Center, Psychological Counseling Center, Interfaith Chaplaincy, Orientation, Student Activities, Athletics, Community Service, and the Intercultural Center. The senior vice president serves as principal liaison to the Students and Enrollment Committee of the Board of Trustees.
The Senior Vice President for Communications oversees the ongoing evolution and execution of Brandeis University's comprehensive communications program. The senior vice president is the principal spokesperson for the university and is responsible for external relations and an integrated marketing communications program that highlights Brandeis's research accomplishments, academic excellence, and social justice mission. As head of the Office of Communications, the senior vice president oversees media relations, creative services (including design, editorial services, and production), digital communications, photography and video, BrandeisNOW (the online Brandeis newsletter), and Brandeis Magazine.
The General Counsel is the chief legal adviser to the president, the Board of Trustees, and the University's senior management team.
Brandeis National Committee
The Brandeis National Committee (formerly Brandeis University National Women's Committee) is an organization committed to providing financial support to the university. Since its founding in 1948, it has contributed more than $115 million to the libraries for the acquisition of books and scholarly journals, restoration and preservation, development of computer technology and student work assistance. More recently, its mission was expanded to fund student scholarships and fellowships.
The organization's national center is locatedon campus, where professional staff members collaborate with volunteers to coordinate fundraising efforts and to develop educational programs for members within chapters across the country. The Brandeis National Committee connects its members to Brandeis through fundraising and through activities that reflect the values of the university.
