Heavy Thoughts
In the 2010-2011 school year Brandeis trashed 2,714,460 lbs. To put in in perspective, that's the weight of over 270 elephants! Can you imagine all those elephants hanging out on campus? Hanging out on the great lawn? Swimming in Yakus Pond?
We don't want recycling and waste reduction to be "the elephant in the room". Feel free to let your friends and colleagues know how they can help reduce waste and recycle properly! Often people are unaware of the ease of recycling at Brandeis with our single stream system and just need a friendly reminder.

Brandeis Loves Recycling
As part of the Recyclemania 2012 competition, a friendly competition among colleges, Brandeis is working to reduce our waste. We are tracking the weekly pounds of trash, recycling, and composting that leaves campus. You can see our improvements in our recycling rate over time. Let's try and improve this year's numbers! We will use our results from last year as a benchmark to beat. The competition is a campus wide effort, meaning all students, faculty, staff, and visitors can participate!
We have named February as Brandeis Loves Recycling Month. The Eco-Reps will be holding several events in partnership with SEA and other campus groups throughout the month and invite all Brandeis community members to participate.

Recycling Rate: combines trash and recyclable materials to determine recycling rate as a percentage of its overall waste generation. This demonstrates achievement in both source reduction and recycling.
-
Waste Diversion Rate: combines trash, commercial composting, and recyclable materials to determine recycling rate as a percentage of its overall waste generation.
-
Waste Per Student: Amount of municipal solid waste (both recyclables and trash) per person. This statistic emphasizes reuse and source reduction over recycling. Use Less, Recycle the Rest- see Reduction Tips.
-
Recycling Per Student: This statistics shows how many recyclables per person we are generating- while better to recycle than trash we would love to see this number go down too!
