Overview
The Elementary MAT (DeLeT) (DeLeT: Day School Leadership through Teaching; the Hebrew word for “door”), is a degree program that opens a door to a career in day school education. DeLeT prepares recent college graduates and mid-career changers to teach general and Judaic studies in the elementary grades in Jewish day schools.
The program involves two summers of study on campus at Brandeis University and a yearlong mentored internship in a local day school, partnered with an experienced mentor teacher. There is a sister DeLeT program at Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Los Angeles, which has distinct features and shares common elements with the program at Brandeis.
Students in the Elementary MAT (DeLeT) program earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in elementary education, and are eligible for initial teaching licensure (grades 1 - 6) from the State of Massachusetts.
Admission is highly selective, with class size limited to 10-12 students per year. DeLeT students come from diverse professional, academic and personal backgrounds. The program is open to hard-working, Jewishly-motivated, and intellectually-curious individuals who love children and are passionate about learning and teaching.
Generous scholarships are available.
