The Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry at The Hebrew University

The Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry was founded in 1959 by Prof. Moshe Davis (1916-1996) who served as its head till 1973. It is named after Avraham Harman (1915-1992) who served as Israel's Ambassador to the United States, was the President of the Hebrew University from 1968-1983, and Chancellor of the University till his death. The Institute serves as a framework for multidisciplinary research and instruction, and on its staff of researchers and instructors are to be found historians, social scientists, and researchers of literature, culture and education. This diversity directs toward a deep understanding of the different subjects being researched and taught, and encourages the development of new thoughts and attitudes regarding the research of the contemporary Jewish world.

The Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies
Founded in 1980, the Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies (CMJS), is a multi-disciplinary research center dedicated to bringing the concepts, theories, and techniques of social science to bear on the study of contemporary Jewish life. Core topics concern the development of ethnic and religious identities and their attendant personal, communal, and societal outcomes. Our research incorporates cutting-edge methodologies and strives to be rigorous and transparent. In this fashion, we hope to contribute to scholarly understanding of American Jewry and Jewish institutions and provide policy-relevant analysis.
