Engaging with the Broader Community

Brandeis’ social justice mission comes to life through the work of dedicated students like Stephanie Johnson ’13

Stephanie Johnson ’13 knows that not all the lessons she learns at Brandeis will come in the classroom. A politics major from Brooklyn, N.Y., Johnson devotes hours each week to her work as a tenants advocate at the Waltham Alliance to Create Housing (WATCH), an organization that promotes affordable housing in the area. The internship is supported by a stipend from the TD Charitable Foundation.

Such commitment to community engagement and social justice is a hallmark of the Brandeis experience.

This semester is a particularly busy one for Johnson. In addition to her housing advocacy, she will travel to the Massachusetts State House in the spring of 2011 to push for a law that would ensure individuals convicted of crimes have access to DNA evidence they might use in an appeal.

As if that's not enough, Johnson is a member of the Voices of Soul a cappella group, the women's rugby team, and is a founder and leader of the Girl Empowerment Group at the Waltham YMCA.
