Nava and Mark Baranek MA'83

Hornstein alumnus Mark Baranek MA'83 and his wife Nava visited the Hornstein offices in late June. "Bernie Reisman was my mentor," said Mark. "And these were my people," he said, pointing to photos of Irving Greenberg and Robert Hiller, Milender Fellows from 1982 and 1983. Mark and Nava were in the Boston area on vacation. Mark is currently Director of Congregational Engagement at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach.

Michael Soberman visits Brandeis University

The iCenter's Michael Soberman joined us in early June for talks about their "Masters Concentration in Israel Education," an annual program in which seven current Hornstein students, as iCenter Fellows, are participating in this spring. Rabbi Charles Simon from FJMC.org at Brandeis University

Rabbi Charles Simon from the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs (FJMC) shared his work in building community for Jewish men with us on April 15. The FJMC mission is to involve Jewish men in Jewish life by building and strengthening men's clubs in the conservative / Masorti Movement. Rabbi Simon is the author of"Jewish Men at the Crossroads" and other books.

Suzie Jacobson, Keshet

Hornstein Community Time on March 25, 2015, was spent with Keshet trainer, Suzie Jacobson. Suzie raised issues of language and proposed strategies we can use in our efforts to make the Jewish community inclusive of all, specifically, people who identify as LGBTQ. Rabbi R. Karpov, Ph.D. at Brandeis University

Rabbi R. Karpov joined Prof. Jonathan Sarna for a 'lunch & learn' conversation in early March. A professor of English at Langston University and a former Temple Beth Israel rabbi, Rabbi Karpov was one of the first ten woman rabbis to hold a solo United Synagogue pulpit.

Arnee Winshall and Alan Leifer

Despite mountains of snow, Arnee Winshall and Alan Leifer took time out of their busy schedules on January 29 to come to Brandeis and speak to Hornstein students about boards of directors and their roles in nonprofit management.

Beth Bernstein MA’90 is now Interim Executive Director of the Brandeis National Committee at Brandeis University

Jody Brauner MA'88 is now Early Intervention Service Coordinator at Hamaspik of Rockland County.

Elan Burman MA’06 is now Director of Planned Giving and Major Gifts at Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.

Rachel Canar MA'00 starts a new consulting agency in May 2015. She is based in Tel Aviv.

Eli Cohn MA/MA'15 starts work in August 2015 as Project Manager, South Peninsula Jewish Teen Foundation for the San Francisco Jewish Community Foundation. 

Ellen Cohn MA’88 is receiving her Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Jewish Education and Administration at Yeshiva University, Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education (May, 2015). Her dissertation was on adult education in the Modern Orthodox community, which included an 850 respondent survey of congregants from synagogues across the United States. Hornstein Professor Dr. Joseph Reimer served as an active member of the dissertation committee.

Rosa Kramer Franck MA/MBA’07 is now Director of Development at The Vilna Shul, Boston's Center for Jewish Culture.

Elisha (Horen) Gechter MA/MBA’07 is now Program Manager for the Wexner Israel Fellowship and the Wexner Senior Leadership Program at Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the Wexner Foundation.

Cara Unowsky Glickman MA/MA’03 is now Vice President of Administration and Finance at Temple Emanu-El of New York City.

Elizabeth Goldberg MA’06 is now Senior Director of General Campaign at Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta.

Melissa Goraj MA/MBA’13 is now a Staff Accountant at Johnson Lambert in Burlington, Vermont.

Meredith Grabek MA/MBA'15 begins her new position as Senior Development Officer at Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Greater Boston's Jewish Federation, on June 1, 2015. Meredith was recently spotlighted for her social activism when she joined the American Jewish World Service’s (AJWS) three-day 2015 Policy Summit to lobby for laws to protect women and girls against violence and to advance the legal rights of people in the LGBT global community.

Jeff Hast MA/MBA’13 is now a College Guidance Coordinator & Psychology Teacher at BASIS Scottsdale in Arizona.

Lynn Hazan MA'80 recently celebrated 30 years in the business of executive recruiting; and 15 years as President of Lynn Hazan & Assoc. Says Lynn, "I attribute much of our success to the outreach and community building skills I developed while at Hornstein."

Barry Silvermore MA'73 celebrateed 15 years as Director of the Center for Nonprofit Studies as Austin Community College; and was the keynote presenter on "The Power of the Future" at the 2014 conference of the Association of Binational Centers of Latin America I. Florianapolis, Brazil.

Evan Taksar MA/MA'15 is joining the year-round leadership team at Camp Alonim in Brandeis, California after she graduates in May.

Sabrina Taran MA/MBA'15 is joining the Planning and Strategy team at Federation CJA.

Lora Eliachar Tarlin MA'92 is now working at the Schechter Holocaust Services program at Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Boston.

Donna Tarutz MA’79 is now Senior Program Manager at Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston.

Alan Teperow

Alan Teperow MA’76 (pictured at left) retires after 33 years as Executive Director of the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts. Alan is credited for building "bridges and warm community relationships with the members of synagogues, minyanim and agencies throughout the Commonwealth." He will be honored at the SCM’s Annual Tribute
on June 22.

Larry Tobin MA/MBA'16 has been promoted to Associate Vice President, Major Gifts, Combined Jewish Philanthropies. 


HONORS & AWARDS

Joel Abramson MA/MBA'16 was selected as an American Jewish Committee (AJC) Goldman Fellow for 2015. He'll be working at the AJC Washington, D.C. office in the summer and traveling to Germany with other fellows. 

Alyssa Bogdanow MA/MA'16 received the 2015 Bernard and Rena J. Olshansky Prize for Jewish Communal Service. Rachel Eisen MA/MA'16 received a Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Research on Jews and Gender from Hadassah-Brandeis Institute for her essay "'I carried a watermelon': Jewish Women Writers Confront the JAP Stereotype."

Elisha (Horen) Gechter MA/MBA'07 was named a 2015 Chai in the Hub winner.

Alison Kur MA’02 received a Covenant Award from The Covenant Foundation.

Dr. Zohar Raviv MA'00 receives the 2015 Bernard Reisman Professional Excellence Award. As the award recipient, he gave the keynote address at the Hornstein Program's Class of 2015 Commencement Ceremony.

Jennifer Zwilling Rosenwasser MA'98 and Jordan Fruchtman MA/MBA'08 were recently selected as part of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation's inaugural class of the Schusterman Leadership Fellowship program. 


CONFERENCES & EVENTS

Matthew Brown MA/MPP'13 participated in a consultation session on "Research directions for Jewish youth philanthropy" and was part of the pre-conference Emerging Scholars Mentoring Seminar at the 2015 Network for Research in Jewish Education organized by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in New York and the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry.

Joe Hyams MA/MBA'15 gave the keynote address to CJP's Annual Lawyers & Accountants Conference. 

Sara Miller MA/MBA'16, Nate Vaughan MA/MPP'15, and David Korenthal MA/MBA'16 attended Taglit Fellows Conference in San Diego.

Hornstein faculty Amy Sales and Joseph Reimer were part of a discussion entitled "The evolving relationship between Jewish education and psychology" at the 2015 Network for Research in Jewish Education Prof. Sales presented a paper on Israel education at camp; and Prof. Reimer presented a paper on Shabbat at camp.  

Nate Vaughan MA/MPP'15 participated in a consultation session at the 2015 Network for Research in Jewish Education called "Don't you want to live here too? A plan to study small American Jewish communities." He also presented a paper based on his Hornstein Program capstone project entitled "Pedagogy in Jewish education: Understanding how Jewish education impacts adult Jewish behavior." Earlier in the year he attended Taglit Fellows Conference in San Diego.
