How to Obtain Informed Consent for Exempt Research

A signed consent document is generally not required for exempt research. Investigators are required to provide adequate information about the research to potential subjects. The investigator can deliver this information verbally or both verbally and in writing.

When applying for BCPHS review, submit the text to be used in obtaining informed consent. Include the following information: (a) identify who is conducting the study including institutional affiliation and academic status; (b) describe why the study is being conducted; (c) state who is being recruited and why they have been chosen; (d) explain what subjects will be asked to do and estimate how long it will take to complete the task; (e) emphasize that participation is voluntary; (f) describe incentive offered or costs that may be incurred; (g) provide a department number for telephone inquiries. If the instrument is being administered in a classroom setting, offer options to those who choose not to participate.
