When to Call
BEMCo is a Basic Life Support level ambulance service with EMTs on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week during the academic year. Do not hesitate to call us if you need emergency medical attention. If you are unsure whether or not to call BEMCo, call.
Be aware that as a basic life support service, BEMCo must remain within its state-sanctioned scope of practice, and as such, may not dispense painkillers, cold medications or other non-EMS drugs.
BEMCo and Brandeis Public Safety
BEMCo operates individually as an ambulance licensed under the auspices of the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services. Campus Police accompany BEMCo on calls to assist the EMTs. They are NOT on scene to bring charges against patients. If a patient were to call because of intoxication the police would NOT initiate judiciary action. The only reason an officer would file a complaint against a patient is if the individual is violent or causes property damage. CAs and CDCs that come on-scene are asked to step out; however, they retain the right to investigate the situation at a later time.
As health professionals, BEMCo members are bound by confidentiality regulations. Any information about health conditions that are revealed by individuals treated by corps EMTs will be kept confidential.
At NO time will any information provided to BEMCo be made available to any university department or to community living. Only two individuals have access to reports: our medical director and operations officer. The information is shared only for quality assurance.
