Do all members have to teach a course? (lead a Study Group)

No. Although we encourage those members who would like to share with others their passion for a subject and who enjoy teaching, there is no requirement to lead a Study Group.

If I drop out of a study group during term, may I expect a refund or a credit toward a future membership?

For a membership beginning in the fall or spring, you may request a refund of your membership dues up until the end of the first week of courses. For a membership beginning in the summer or winter, you may request a refund of your membership dues up until the end of the first week of a term. After that time, no refunds are available. In most cases, partial refunds are not available.

In extraordinary circumstances, e.g. related to a debilitating illness, you may request a full or partial credit towards a future membership. Please note requests for refunds and for credits must come during the term in question. They will not be considered once a given term has expired.

If I drop out of a Brandeis Faculty Seminar, may I expect a refund or a credit toward a future seminar?

You may request a refund of your seminar fee up until the Thursday before the beginning of the seminar.  After that time, no refunds will normally be available. In extraordinary circumstances, e.g. related to serious illness, please contact the Director at bollidirector@brandeis.edu.

If I drop out of a study group during term, may I expect a reserved spot in that study group the next time that it is given?

No, participation in courses is determined by lottery, except in the case of BOLLI Study Group Leaders, who receive a regulated number of course exemptions in consideration of their course leadership; and in special circumstances, when a study group leader requires assistance from an individual who might otherwise not be admitted to their course.

Is this program non-sectarian?

Yes. We welcome people of all backgrounds to join BOLLI. We strive for a diverse population among our members.

Do members attend classes with Brandeis students?

No. BOLLI classes are just for BOLLI members. However, there are opportunities to interact with Brandeis students in activities such as the partnership with international students at the Heller School and at the International Business School.

Are any courses led by Brandeis professors?

Yes.  Brandeis faculty members lead lecture courses and intensive seminars in the summer and winter terms. Lecture courses are complimentary for all BOLLI members.  Seminars are open to the general public on a tuition basis, and discounted for BOLLI members.

Do members participate in social activities as well as classes?

There are many activities in addition to classes that provide opportunities to socialize with other BOLLI members – the annual welcome back brunch in September, new member “mingles”, lunchtime in the Gathering Place. In addition, a number of special interest groups provide members with opportunities to know each other better. Examples are a poetry circle, a writers' guild, The New Yorker fiction salon, and a fiction book group. Click here for a complete list of Special Interest Groups. Also, many members find a whole new circle of friends with whom they socialize outside of the formal BOLLI program.

Is financial aid available?
