Stop the Bleed - Emergency

Campus AED and Bleeding Control Program

The Department of Public Safety (Division of Emergency Management) oversees the Campus AED and Bleeding Control Program at Brandeis University. Our mission is to ensure rapid access to life-saving equipment and empower the campus community to respond effectively during medical emergencies. Through regular inspections and maintenance, we guarantee that all Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and Stop the Bleed (STB) kits are functional and ready for use.

What Is an AED?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device designed to analyze heart rhythms and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock to restore a normal heartbeat. AEDs are crucial in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, where every minute counts. Studies indicate that immediate defibrillation can significantly increase survival rates. Our AEDs are user-friendly, equipped with voice prompts and visual cues to guide responders through the process.

What Is a Stop the Bleed Kit?

Stop the Bleed kits are emergency resources that provide essential tools to control severe bleeding. Each kit typically includes:

  • C-A-T® Tourniquet

  • Emergency trauma dressing

  • Compressed gauze

  • Trauma shears

  • Nitrile gloves

  • Permanent marker

  • Instructional guide

These kits are strategically placed alongside AEDs across campus to ensure immediate accessibility during emergencies.
