The Communication and Language Skills Program is a collaboration between English Language Programs and the School of Business and Economics. The program offers language support for all students through a series of workshops, individual tutorials, language coaching sessions and collaborations with School of Business and Economics faculty and staff.

The focus of ELP’s work is on the linguistic and cultural elements students must understand in order to communicate effectively in an academic and business environment. While the work of ELP is often important for international students, effective communication is a challenge that all students face, so ELP is delighted to offer services to domestic and international students alike.
Through this program, students develop their abilities in the following areas:
- Academic language skills necessary to succeed in their courses.
- Professional language for job search, networking and interviews.
- Business communication proficiency, both oral and written, as expected by international corporations.
- Intercultural communication skills based in a social and cultural understanding of US American business practices and students’ own languages and backgrounds.

Students are eligible to make appointments as individuals or as groups for language coaching sessions with Angela Tribus throughout the semester. During these sessions, students receive support on any language, communication or cultural question or task. Most students choose to focus on professional or academic writing (e.g., fellowship applications, project reports, résumés and cover letters), presentation rehearsal, interview preparation or networking skills.

Workshops are offered throughout the semester on a variety of topics. Participants learn and practice specific aspects of writing, speaking and cultural awareness in an interactive and student-centered environment. Students receive resources for advancing their communication skills in various settings, are given immediate feedback and gain confidence as they develop these skills.
Recent ELP workshops have focused on formality and business writing; small talk and networking; professional and everyday vocabulary development; and interviewing. Please refer to the Student Portal for current dates, times, locations and workshop topics. Registration is required, so reserve your spot quickly as space is limited.
English Language Programs teaches a networking workshop at the start of each fall semester, as well as several classes within the Launching Your Global Career series. Career coaches regularly refer students to ELP office hours for language support in their internship and job search, including help with resumes, cover letters, interviews, and any other employment-related communication. ELP works closely with the Career Strategies and Engagement Center to maintain current best practices for a successful job search.
ELP supports field project groups in enhancing professional communication with their partner corporation throughout the project and in producing a high-quality final report and final presentation. Each field project group may arrange ELP office hours to work on their presentation and report. ELP also co-teaches the field project presentation skills webinar.
English Language Programs works closely with faculty and staff at the School of Business and Economics to ensure student success both in and out of the classroom. Professors can use ELP services for class assignments by arranging for individuals or groups to meet with ELP to develop their writing and/or presentation skills prior to submitting an assignment. Additionally, ELP assists students in developing personal statements for the Hassenfeld Immersion Program application each year, and in preparing for case competitions, industry treks and club activities. Students may sign up for ELP office hours for support in any of the above areas.
