Siobhan Gartland, PhD '23, Molecular and Cell Biology
Epigenomics Application Specialist at Hologic Diagenode
Can you describe your career path to your current job and some of your responsibilities in this position?
After completing my undergraduate degree, I immediately entered the Molecular Cell Biology PhD program at Brandeis University. Upon graduation, I began my job search and eventually found my current position at Hologic Diagenode. I serve as an Epigenomics Application Specialist, a role similar to that of a Field Application Specialist (FAS) at other companies. My responsibilities include communicating the science behind our company's epigenetic solutions to customers. This involves answering technical questions, troubleshooting experiments, assisting with sales, working the company booth and presenting posters at conferences, and delivering technical workshops and presentations to clients both in person and online. What services and/or resources did you use at Brandeis for your career search?
The Brandeis GSAS Professional Development team was a tremendous help throughout my job search. I frequently met with Marika to update and format my CV and resume, and to receive tips on writing cover letters. She also provided interview coaching, which boosted my confidence during the interview process. Additionally, we discussed my interviews afterward to help me evaluate the companies I was considering. What skills from your Brandeis degree have you found most valuable in your current work?
The Brandeis Life Sciences department excels at preparing graduate students for public speaking about science, a crucial skill for my position. Engaging in pizza talks, posters, journal clubs, and lab meeting presentations honed my scientific communication abilities. The round table discussions in the Marr lab equipped me with the skills and confidence to help clients troubleshoot their experiments and overcome challenges. What advice do you have for current students as they embark on their job search?
My biggest piece of advice is something I've struggled with for a long time: don't be afraid to ask for help, and ask multiple times if needed. Getting feedback on your CV is not only beneficial for its content but also for your confidence. The job market is tough right now, and many companies may not even have the courtesy to notify you if you didn't get the job after an interview. It's invaluable to have support from the GSAS Professional Development team to remind you that you are a strong candidate and that you will eventually find a good opportunity.
