Urgent and Emergency Care

If you, a friend or a student is at imminent risk, please call Public Safety at 781-736-3333 (on campus) or 911 (off campus). Public Safety will respond immediately if you are on campus; if school is in session, the Brandeis Emergency Medical Corps (BEMCo) will also assist you. Police will respond immediately if you are off campus.


When to Go to the Emergency Room

Emergency Rooms are for life-threatening injury or illness, such as:

  • Major injury

  • Severe shortness of breath

  • Loss of consciousness or seizure

  • Sudden, severe pain (abdominal, chest, head)

  • Severe bleeding

  • Poisoning or overdose

  • Severe or worsening allergic reaction, especially if breathing is difficult

  • Severe or persistent vomiting

  • Suicidal or homicidal feelings

  • Severe vaginal bleeding

  • Sexual violence

When to Go to an Urgent Care Center

Urgent care is for non-life-threatening, urgent health needs that cannot wait until the Health Center is open, such as:

  • X-rays

  • Urinary pain with back pain

  • A deep laceration that may need stitches

  • Need for IV hydration due to severe vomiting or unresolved high fever

When to Use the Brandeis Health Center
  • Fever that goes down with Tylenol or aspirin

  • Sore throat, colds, cough, ear ache

  • Minor cuts or burns

  • Skin rash

  • Mild nausea with vomiting or diarrhea without fever

  • Mild burning or irritation on urination

  • Chronic joint or muscle pain/strain

  • Non-life-threatening conditions
