Course Exemptions

Students may request an exemption from one or more required courses, but all such requests must be made during a student's first semester. Exemption requests should be made to the program advisor, subject to the review and approval of the Office of the University Registrar.

Obtaining an exemption from a required course does not reduce the number of courses needed to complete the program; rather, exempted courses need to be replaced with electives.

Programs may make exemption contingent on passing an exam.  For the School of Business and Economics exemptions for these courses requires passing an exemption exam: Applied International Macroeconomics (ECON 202a), Intro to Probability and Statistics for Business and Economics (ECON 210a), International Trade Policy and Institutions (ECON 260a), and Financial Management (FIN 203a). (Accelerated MA students can petition to transfer equivalent coursework to meet these requirements.)

For other courses students must demonstrate that comparable academic work was done prior to beginning a graduate program. The work must be relevant and relate closely with the material covered in the Brandeis class, as determined by the program directors. The request must be in writing; the School of Business and Economics requires a specific form -- the Petition for Exemption from Degree Requirement form. These may be obtained from the school website. A course syllabus and transcript must accompany the completed form.
