Refunds

The only fee that may be refundable, in part, is the tuition fee. No refund of the tuition fee will be made because of illness, absence, or dismissal during the academic semester. A student who is withdrawing must notify the university in writing: graduate students must notify their school, and undergraduate students must notify the Office of Academic Services. Refunds will be based on the date of notification and calculated in accordance with the following:

1. Tuition

Withdrawal
Student Withdrawal During Fall/Spring Terms: Tuition Adjustments for Tuition Charged at a Flat Rate or Per Credit Rate

Before the Academic Period Start Date: 100%

On or before the 10th day after the Academic Period Start Date: 75%

On or before the 30th day after the Academic Period Start Date: 50%

There is no refund for dropped courses for tuition and fees charged at a flat rate

Study Abroad: Withdrawal from Semester/Academic Year Study Abroad and Withdrawal/Leave of Absence from Brandeis

Brandeis tuition refunds follow the above outlined withdrawal timeline. Brandeis tuition refunds are assessed based on the Brandeis calendar and not the study abroad program calendar. Students will also be charged any non-refundable payments made on their behalf by Brandeis to their study abroad program (for example, partial or full payment of tuition) as outlined in the Office of Study Abroad Participation Agreement.

Study Abroad: Withdrawal from Semester/Academic Year Study Abroad and Return to Campus

Students are charged any non-refundable tuition payments made on the student's behalf to their study abroad program in addition to their Brandeis tuition charges.

Brandeis Summer School Refund Schedule

Once class begins, students have until the course drop deadline to drop the course directly in the Brandeis Workday system to receive a 100% removal of the course tuition charges. All drops are time-stamped. If students encounter any difficulties with dropping a course in Workday self-service, they should email the summer school right away with their request to drop a course. The time-stamp of the email will determine the time of the drop, so even if the office is closed for the weekend, the time of the email will count toward the refund policy. Please be sure written requests are submitted from the student via the student's Brandeis University email account.

The drop deadlines for each summer session are as follows:

  • Summer Session 1 and Extended Session 0 Course Drop Deadline: Sunday, June 7th, 2026 at 11:59pm
  • Summer Session 2 Course Drop Deadline: Sunday, July 12th, 2026 at 11:59pm

Students who withdraw from a course after the session's course drop deadline are responsible for all tuition and fees associated with the course.

Brandeis-Run Summer Study Abroad Programs

Students who withdraw after confirming their intent to enroll, but prior to the start of the program, will be held to the following refund schedule:

  • Withdrawal more than 30 days before the published program start date: Students will be charged the $500 non-refundable Program Deposit plus any non-refundable deposits or fees paid on their behalf by Brandeis University and our partner institutions overseas.
  • Withdrawal 30 days or fewer before the published program start date: Students will be charged $1,500 plus any non-refundable deposits or fees paid on their behalf by Brandeis University and our partner institution overseas.
  • Withdrawal on or after the published program start date: No refund will be provided.

All refund questions and requests should be addressed to the Office of Student Financial Services.

2. Scholarship

In the case of a scholarship student who withdraws, the student's account will be refunded consistent with the proportion of tuition paid. Of the total tuition paid, 100 percent will be reimbursed if the student leaves before the first day of instruction, 75 percent will be reimbursed if the student leaves on or before the tenth day of the term; 50 percent on or before the thirtieth day of the term, and no refund thereafter.

3. Stafford Loans

In compliance with federal law, special refund arrangements apply to students receiving aid under Title IV. Contact the Office of Student Financial Services for additional information or visit the Return of Title IV Funds page.

4. Tuition Assistance Funds

When a student withdraws during a period in which he or she is receiving Tuition Assistance funds, the amount of the funds that must be returned to the program is based solely on the length of time the student was enrolled prior to withdrawing.

The amount of funds earned by the student is directly proportional to time enrolled, through 60 percent of the period of enrollment. After 60 percent, the student is considered to have earned all aid.

5. Refund Policy for Dropped Courses

A student who drops courses on the per-course tuition-charge basis is allowed a refund following this schedule:

  1. Full semester-long courses

    • On or before the 15th day after the Course Section Start Date: 100 percent of the dropped course’s tuition fee.

    • On or before the 30th day after the Course Section Start Date: 50 percent of the dropped course’s tuition fee.

    • After the 30th day after the Course Section Start Date: no refund.

  2. Module courses

On or before the 10th day of instruction for the module session: 100 percent of the dropped course's tuition fee. The Academic Calendar page on the Registrar's site includes a link to the list of class meeting dates for a module session.

After the 10th day of instruction for the module session: no refund.

Housing and Food Charges

Refund of housing and food (board) contract charges are determined in accordance with the terms outlined in the contract.

Policy If Brandeis Moves to All Online Courses

There will be no refund of tuition or other fees in the event that Brandeis determines that all courses must move to a virtual format.
