Through Lines: With Associate Professor of Sculpture Tory Fair
Experience the exhibition Gordon Matta-Clark: Anarchitect through the lens of artist Tory Fair, Associate Professor of Sculpture at Brandeis University. This program is part of the museum's Through Lines series, which aims to shed light on the radical ideas and transformational, multidisciplinary processes that continue to shape artistic practice.
In her tour, Fair will bridge connections between Matta-Clark’s revolutionary cuts, the architectural framing of Mary Miss’s early sculptures, and her own explorations of Miss’s post-minimal legacy. As Boston Globe correspondent Cate McQuaid recently wrote, Fair “draws on abstraction and minimalism, throwing in a touch of representation, to evoke feminist themes.” Recent research into the 1996 Rose exhibition More than Minimal: Feminism and Abstraction in the ’70s, organized by Susan L. Stoops, led Fair to a close correspondence with featured artist Mary Miss and a deep engagement with the work of Miss and other conceptual forebears. Fair’s Through Lines talk in turn frames Matta-Clark’s practice, and his engagement with the urban environment, within her own work and research.
