Film Screening of Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack

Program April 19, 2026, 4 p.m.
Wasserman Cinematheque, Brandeis Sachar International Center

Join the Rose Art Museum for a special screening of the acclaimed 2019 documentary Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack, an intimate and illuminating portrait of one of the most dynamic and uncompromising artists of the 20th century. The film offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from Flack as she reflects on her groundbreaking career, her fierce independence, and her role in shaping Photorealist painting on her own terms.

Before the screening, guests are warmly encouraged to take part in a docent-led tour of Photorealism in Focus, which features two of Flack’s striking paintings: Family Portrait (Farb Family Portrait) (1969–1970) and Shiva Blue (1972–1973). The exhibition brings together pioneering and contemporary artists who explore the relationship between painting and photography, inviting us to reconsider realism, perception, and the stories artists choose to tell. The tour offers valuable context for the film and a deeper understanding of Flack’s bold vision within the movement.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Directed by Deborah Shaffer and Rachel Reichman, Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack (2019) is a compelling portrait of the trailblazing artist whose four-decade career spans Abstract Expressionism to Photorealism and helped redefine the possibilities for women in contemporary art. At 88, Flack reflects on her evolution as a feminist, rebel, mother, sculptor, and teacher, while the film follows her as she embarks on a bold new creative direction and speaks candidly about her experiences raising a child with autism. Intimate and inspiring, Queen of Hearts captures an artist who continued to challenge herself and the world around her with unflinching honesty and boundless imagination.

This program is held in conjunction with the exhibition, Photorealism in Focus, February 11–May 31, 2026.
