Brandeis' Year on Climate Action
Planning for the 2022-2023 Brandeis Year on Climate Action is currently underway!
About Brandeis' Year on Climate Action
In its 2020 draft climate action plan and recommendations to the president, the President's Task Force on Campus Sustainability recommended that Brandeis undertake a year-long effort to engage the entire community, including alumni, in curricular and co-curricular programming that catalyzes and deepens our understanding of climate change as a social justice issue. The focus will be to expand our dedication to tackling this urgent problem in courses, course projects, student events, guest speakers, conferences, student activism, and more.
Taking inspiration from Smith College’s Year on Climate Change (2019-2020), and the Brandeis International Business School’s Business of Climate Change Week, we will leverage the strengths of existing institutional events through partnerships with key campus stakeholders connecting with existing interest groups on campus.
We will leverage the strengths of existing institutional events through partnerships with key campus stakeholders connecting with existing interest groups on campus.
One goal of the year on climate is to encourage faculty to incorporate climate change topics in existing courses, whether in a class, a day, a unit or more.
The education subcommittee of the Brandeis Sustainability Committee is developing various types of faculty workshops that will provide interested faculty with assistance and resources to incorporate climate change topics in their courses. Opportunities will be announced as they arise.
Speakers and events
Rather than increase the total number of programs taking place on campus, the goal of the year on climate is to look at our existing and planned set of events and engagements and encourage their focus to intersect with and examine climate issues. We will be hosting some preview events in Spring 2022.
Exciting new opportunities
While the goal of the year on climate is to mostly leverage existing events and programs, we do have exciting new opportunities that coincide with our efforts, including:
- Launch of the Climate Justice, Science, and Policy Minor
- Launch the Laura Goldin Lecture Series, which was funded through the Brandeis Sustainability Fund in 2020, to support visiting speakers who focus on the intersection of climate change and environmental and social justice
Updates will be posted to this page going forward.
We welcome your feedback and questions!
