Panel Discussion on the Life and Music of Edwin Geist, 2:00 p.m.
Concert 4 p.m.
In a special collaboration with the German Consulate, Goethe Institut of Boston, and the Brandeis University Department of Music and Center for German and European Studies, German soprano Verena Rein will be joined by the Brandeis University Irving Fine Society singers and Boston area musicians to present the seldom-heard music of Edwin Geist (1902-1944). Geist was a teacher, journalist, composer and conductor in Germany before being killed by the Nazis in Lithuania. The haunting story of his life and music will be presented in a panel discussion prior to the concert, featuring Geist biographer Reinhard Kaiser, Dr. Klaus Harer, Deputy Director of The German Cultural Forum for Eastern Europe in Berlin, Dr. Bret Werb, musicologist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, and Edwin Geist's niece, Rosian Zerner.
