Israel Scheffler's Of Human Potential newly published in Chinese
Mandel Center Scholar in Residence Professor Israel Scheffler has just had a Chinese translation published of his 1985 book, Of Human Potential: An Essay in the Philosophy of Education. The translation was published by the East China Normal University Press, and printed in Shanghai.

This is the culmination of several years of work. The edition features a new preface by Dr. Scheffler, which is printed in English and Chinese.
From the preface:
"The democratic ideal precludes the conception of education as in instrument of rule. It is antithetical to the idea of rulers shaping or molding the mind of the pupil. The function of education in a democracy is rather to liberate the mind, strengthen its critical powers, inform it with knowledge and the capacity for independent inquiry, engage its human sympathies, and illuminate its moral and practical choices."
