Nancy Tran: I chose 希望 (きぼう)because it means “hope” and hope is what pushes me forward in life.

Vanessa Mark: I chose 希望 because I have a lot of fond memories from working at a care facility called 希望館 (Kiboukan).

Ioana Negau: I chose 花 (はな, flower) because I like flowers and the shape of the kanji.

John Song: I chose 綺麗 (きれい, beautiful) because 綺麗 is such a 綺麗な word.

Michal Ai: I chose 自閉症 (じへいしょう, autism) because I worked with autistic children at an organization and hope that they can receive more attention from the society.

Elise Shuba:I chose 花 because I like the smooth curve and overall shape of it. It's simple but pretty.

Kevin Dikdan: I chose 旨味 (うまみ, savory) because I love food and want to hang it in my kitchen next year.

Anthony Fong: I chose 家 (いえ, home) because my Japanese teacher said that she liked it when she was a kid.

Leo Li: I chose 舞 (まい, dance) because it is aesthetically appealing in both its written form and meaning.

New and returning students came to the department-wide Open House for food and conversation with representatives from the GRALL programs (German Studies, Russian Studies, Chinese Language, and Japanese Language). Each program shared international desserts, and faculty and students played interactive games and constructed origami in front of Shiffman.
