The Toledo Museum of Art hosted the exhibition “Life in Miniature: Ceramic Netsuke from the Silverman Collection” from Oct. 1, 2010, through Feb. 27, 2011. The works were donated by Toledo native Richard Silverman. During the Edo Period (1615–1868), wealthy Japanese men wore opulent personal accessory cases (inro) attached by small fasteners known as netsuke. These miniature sculptural pieces were created by Japanese artists in a wide variety of materials and eventually became highly collectible for their whimsy and craftsmanship.
