Research Integrity at Brandeis University

Brandeis University is committed to the highest standards of research conduct supported by the offices and programs listed below.
Brandeis Committee for Protection of Human Subjects
The Brandeis Committee for Protection of Human Subjects (BCPHS) is the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Brandeis University. As such, it is charged with reviewing all
research involving human subjects
conducted at Brandeis University or by a member of the Brandeis community, regardless of the funding source, to ensure that
the research meets with federal, state, local, and institutional regulations. Such research must be reviewed by the IRB prior to its beginning.
Brandeis' IRB does not grant retrospective IRB approval.

Institutional Biosafety Committee
Brandeis University has established an Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to oversee the safe conduct of research involving human blood, fluids, tissues,
and cell lines; infectious agents; select agents; and recombinant DNA technology. The committee ensures compliance with the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Guidelines and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). All faculty, staff, students or users of the facilities at Brandeis University who are contemplating
use of recombinant DNA research must comply with these Guidelines. At Brandeis University, all protocols in which recombinant DNA or the other biohazardous materials
listed above will be used, regardless of the funding source, must be submitted to the Institutional Biosafety Committee for review.

Responsible Conduct of Research Program
The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Program at Brandeis University is part of the educational and outreach activities of the Office
of Research Administration and individual Academic Departments. It is overseen by the Research Integrity Officer,
Irving Epstein.

Environmental Health and Safety
In addition to providing a comprehensive and valuable resource on chemical, biological, and laboratory safety, EHS offers compliance oversight, advice,
and assistance. EHS is represented on a number of compliance committees, and collaborates closely with the Office of Research Administration, the Institutional Biosafety Committee,
the Radiation Safety Committee, and the Laboratory Safety Committee.

Controlled Substances
The Controlled Substances Office is located within the Office of Research Administration and works closely with the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office.
The Office provides investigators at Brandeis with knowledge and information to assist them in following applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations as well as
University policies with regard to the use of Controlled Substances in research.
